Community Sequoia Tree Planting on Palomar Mountain
Sequoias
Sequoias are one of Earth's most massive trees and the most giant living trees by volume. Some of the oldest giant sequoias are estimated to be over 3,000 years old. They can reach heights exceeding 300 feet and have trunk diameters up to 36 feet.
There are two main species of sequoia trees: the Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) and the Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens). Both species are native to the western United States and are valued for their majestic presence and commercial timber. Sequoias generally grow at altitudes above 4,000 feet, whereas Coast Redwoods do best below 2,000 feet.
Sequoias can be traced to 200 million years ago when dinosaurs first appeared. Sequoias were the dominant tree in North America and Europe during the Jurassic Period (180 to 135 million years ago) and the Cretaceous Period (35 to 70 million years ago), covering all of North America. Dinosaurs disappeared near the end of that period, but the sequoias lived on. Today, sequoias can also be found in Australia, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, among many other countries.
The most famous groves are in the Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park. However, at least five regenerating groves in southern California have over 750 trees, and Palomar Mountain has over 250 sequoias. The environment at the top of Palomar Mountain matches Sequoia National Park's annual rainfall, snowfall, humidity, temperature, and solar radiation. Further, many areas on the mountain's west side receive over 200 days of coastal fog a year.
If you ever get the chance to visit an older sequoia grove, you'll be in for an unforgettable experience. Walking among these giants is like stepping into a prehistoric world. You'll feel small in comparison but also amazed at the beauty and strength of these majestic trees.
