Solar-powered remote watering system

You can build an automatic self-watering system if your seedling is located in a remote area where water is unavailable. You will need:

  1. a solar panel (5 watts is sufficient),
  2. a 12 VDC rechargeable battery,
  3. a 12 VDC timer, and
  4. a small 12 VDC water pump, as is often used in garden fountains.

The battery and timer are in a waterproof plastic case, and the water pump is submerged in a 5-gallon can with a lid to minimize evaporation. The pump will run for several minutes 2-3 times/week in the summer.
